Advanced Plant Identification with Carol Bornstein
Over the course of two in-person workshops at two renowned native plant gardens, Theodore Payne Foundation and The Gottlieb Native Garden, students will engage with plant material, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and grasses, to expand their understanding of the diversity of plants in California and their uses and needs in the landscape.
DATES AND LOCATION: This class is in-person.
Part 1: April 16th, 2022 9 AM-12 PM at Theodore Payne Foundation Gardens
Part 2: April 30th, 2022 9AM-12PM at The Gottlieb Native Garden
Students should be prepared to stand for several hours in potentially warm or cold weather. The Gottlieb Garden is a private residence with multiple stairs. We recommend students wear closed-toe shoes.
CLASS MATERIALS: Students will receive a Plant ID Handout
CLASS OUTLINE:
1.Learning objectives
- A Identify several dozen species of native plant new to you
- Utilize resources to help you continue to advance your plant ID abilities
- Take better photos of plants for future ID
2.Garden based walk and talk
- Theodore Payne Foundation-3 Hour tour of demonstration gardens, stock plant beds, bulb house, and production facilities
TPF demonstration gardens are located in an hot, inland environment with low labor inputs and minimal irrigation applied. Its manager, Director of horticulture Tim Becker views the space as an experimental garden which is utilized as a source of propagation material for the TPF nursery. The garden is focused on locally adapted species and a broad selection of unique specimens. TPF also houses a substantial bulb collection which will be available to view.
- The Gottlieb Garden-3 Hour tour of a hillside residence
The Gottlieb garden is situated in the Eastern Santa Monica Mountains and is hope to numerable rare as well as common species. The collection has been corrected by the property owner, Susan Gottlieb, with the assistance of Carol Bornstein and other horticulturists. The stunning garden reflects a beautiful home and the passion and time invested in its cultivation. Water features and innovative erosion control and access to the garden’s back slopes are sure to impress.
